chiaroscuro : [kee-ahr-uh-skyoo r-oh] the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting

From a very early age, I have always had a fascination with the darker, sinister and surreal side of art. I am influenced by the Old Masters such as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, even Francis Bacon and Salvador Dali, along with more contemporary artists such as Odd Nerdrum, Michael Hussar, Kevin Llewelyn, David Stoupakis, Dan Quintana, Joel-Peter Witkin, the list goes on and on. Having completed my degree in fine art painting, I continued to build a foundation and portfolio with a focus on traditional mediums, specialising in graphite/charcoal drawing and oil painting.

Eyes always set on the horizon, while traveling and working around Asia I made a decision to apply myself to tattooing and relocated to Germany, where I began to cut my teeth working alongside some of the best artists in the industry. I became a founding member at Monsters Under Your Bed Tattoo Studio in Cologne Germany, where I remained for 5 years with my long time Mentor Tommy Lee Wendtner. From the start I was encouraged to hit the road to take part in a multitude of conventions and guest-spots around Europe. This gave me the opportunity to watch and learn from many fellow artists, some of who I am now lucky enough to call friends.

Chiaroscuro is my fully-licensed private studio space in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Drawing on my personal experiences and accumulated knowledge I strive to give each client an unforgettable experience and a unique, bespoke tattoo.

I describe my work is surreal, sinister, macabre, morbid and in many cases romanic - all elements which I express in both tattooing and also my traditional art.
